Sustainable Forestry
A continuous cycle
Trees are a remarkable resource that, when managed responsibly, can meet a wide range of fundamental needs for people and the planet for generations to come. For more than a century, we’ve been proving it’s possible to harvest and replant on a continuous cycle to both maximize value for our shareholders and ensure our forests continue to thrive forever.
OUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
In the U.S., we own or control nearly 13 million acres of timberlands, primarily in the Pacific Northwest, Northeast and in the South. In Canada, we manage millions of acres of publicly owned land under long-term licenses.
Our competitive advantage is rooted in our scale, expertise and geographic diversity. We have:
- World-class timber holdings
- Scale operations in the Pacific Northwest and U.S. South
- Industry-leading silviculture expertise and sustainability practices
- Unique export and domestic market access, with strong customer relationships and infrastructure
- Relentless focus on driving improvement through operational excellence

SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT
We manage our forests intensively to maximize the value of each acre and produce a sustainable supply of wood fiber for our customers. At the same time, we are careful to protect biological diversity, recreation needs, water quality and other ecosystem services.

Forest Certification
Globally, only about 10 percent of forests are certified. We are proud that 100 percent of our timberlands are certified to the SFI® 2015-2019 Forest Management Standard. Forest certification verifies responsible forest management by developing standards for how forests should be managed and ensuring these practices are being implemented through third-party audits.

MORE THAN A CENTURY OF EXPERTISE
It takes a long time to grow a tree. Typically, 25 to 40 years might pass before final harvest delivers the full return on our investment in tree planting and nurturing. In this time, even small reductions in cost and incremental improvements in growth and quality can yield large benefits and help us maximize the value we get from each acre of land.
- Superior Seedlings: Using the traditional techniques of selection and cross-pollination, we develop seedlings that are hardy, fast-growing, and ideally suited for use as sawtimber.
- Planting and Growing: We practice "precision silviculture," which means that every variable — site preparation, the number of seedlings planted per acre, control of surrounding vegetation, and fertilization — is precisely matched to a site's soil and weather conditions.
- Thinning and Pruning: Using sophisticated, computer-assisted growth models and financial analysis, we selectively thin and prune our trees to produce the exact quality of log our customers require.
